Kacie Main woke up on a blurry Saturday morning, put a hand to her throbbing head, and started to recall the events from the night before. Oh shit, she thought as the evening played back spottily in her head like a Netflix movie during a storm. I can't believe I made out with David. She pulled a pillow over her face and tried to go back to sleep, not yet ready to face those consequences. By most definitions, Kacie lived a social, fulfilling life. She had a good job, great friends, solid family. Aside from the 30-something-and-single combination, her life was picture-perfect. But that was just a filter, like how the right Instagram filter can hide the circles under your eyes. The unfiltered Kacie was restless... uninspired... uncomfortable. Something had to change-- that drunken make-out with her not-single good friend was the straw that broke the camel's back. So she gave up men for Lent-- a 40-day cleanse in an attempt to figure out why she felt unhappy in her happy life.

"I have to admit I wasn't sure if I would be able to relate to Kacie's book. She's a 30-something jaded, hopelessly romantic, party girl (her words) single woman and I'm a 50-something mother of two, former preschool teacher, boring (my words) married for 25 years woman. However, through her very well-written and engaging story I realized this book is for anyone. No matter where we are in our lives, I think we have all experienced some of the same questions as Kacie--what really is my purpose? Am I going in the right direction? Am I truly happy? I think you will enjoy reading about Kacie's journey of reflection and change. She tells it with an honesty and candor that connects with the reader no matter what stage of life you may be in."

  • In full disclosure, I’m Kacie’s mother. This book is very well written and I’m very proud of her! It was, however, a difficult read for me. If you’re a mother of a young unmarried woman, after reading this, you’ll know what I mean. Many mistakes she made, lots of poor choices, and much I wish I didn’t know....but....shocking as it is, it’s all out there now. if you have a daughter you know the mother/daughter relationship is complicated and while I made mistakes with Kacie, I’ve always loved her unconditionally and I still do to this day. I think you’ll enjoy reading about her journey to find her true and best self.and the support she needed from me and her family as she searched. I love the woman she is today and I’m so proud she’s my daughter.
  • I was lucky enough to get a sneak peak of her story, and devoured it this week while I was away on vacation with my family.

On the surface, you'd think a married, mom of 3 living in the suburbs in the north east,  would have little in common with the personal transformation of a single, party-girl in Florida. However, this couldn't be further from the truth. I connected with Kacie's story on so many levels. The questions and process Kacie goes through in her quest for meaning and purpose, are the same that I have been experiencing. Who am I? What are my interests and goals? What do I want to do with my life? What is my purpose?

Kacie's conversational tone makes you feel like you're sitting with a close friend, working together to dissect and analyze life's big questions. She also manages to gracefully maneuver some typically taboo topics--sex, religion, family relationships--with wit and wisdom. I admire Kacie's willingness to "put it all out there" and to do so in an authentic way. I can't wait to see what Kacie's next chapter has in store.

I highly recommend this book for anyone working through  big (or small) life questions, or who has an interest in personal growth and development.
  • If you've ever wondered about your life's purpose, or taken a huge leap of faith to change your circumstances, or wanted desperately to take that leap of faith but were too fearful to try, this book is for you. If you've ever had your heart broken or broken a heart; ever needed compassion or wished you were more compassionate with friends; ever felt unhappy even though on paper you "should" be fulfilled, this book is for you. If you've ever had a quarter-life crisis, or a mid-life crisis, or really any life crisis at all, this book is for you. If you're a mother, sister, girlfriend, boyfriend, father or brother, this book is for you. Kacie tells her own story (in an incredibly funny and engaging way, like reading a friend's diary), but really she is telling the story of every girl who is trying to balance pursuing love with defining her own self-worth; every child trying to build healthy adult relationships with their family members; every young professional trying to understand the intersection of motivation and contribution. Read this book and you'll better understand yourself and those you love the most!

  • This uniquely written story (more like a conversation with your best friend) will have you asking yourself questions (who I am really), taking personal inventory (what have my actions have created), and setting goals to achieve both short and long term. And to add, there’s the suspense of how the drama all unfolds (did Shane call or not?!). Everything is relatable, we’ve all been in her shoes whether we were picking our perfect selfie for our profile picture or found ourselves checking our phone for the fifth time to see if he’s texted back. Kacie, I can’t wait to hear about the next 40 days. Thank you for sharing your journey and doing what so many of us never do, owning your truth.
  • This book spoke to me on such a personal level. Not just because I know the author personally but because I have some of the same questions in my head. My relationship with my mother, sisters, needing to please everyone. It will bring tears to your eyes and make you question your own life. But also long for a 2nd book!! Africa? Shane?
Cassie (using my boyfriends account haha)
  • This was a very well written book. I went to high school with the author and bought the book-mainly to support her new conquest as an author. But, it literally arrived on Ash Wednesday-which i found to be extremely ironic(given the title) haha so I decided to read a few pages- and low an behold ended up finishing the whole thing in less than a week(I’m not really a reader, and I’m a guy reading a book that is probably targeted toward women-so that says a lot). I think the younger generation can relate to a lot, if not all, of the struggles portrayed in it (i know i did). Letting the “third head” (you’ll know once you read it) take over seems all but impossible with today’s technology, but where there’s a will, there’s a way! Her story is very courageous, raw, inspiring and hopeful.
    Great book, Kacie!
