Unwritten A Novel Charles Martin 9781455503964 Books Reviews

  • Well written. Surprising scenes and complex, well-drawn characters Mark a story unlike most. I had started trying to read 2 other Charles Martin novels recently and, while I could tell they were equally well-written, just had a personal block to finishing them. That isn't to dissuade anyone from reading his books, sometimes it's just not the right time. This one started and held my interest almost as soon as about chapter 3 and once I got back to it about chapter four I was so engrossed I couldn't stop.

I would say it's about 2 pain filled people, pain inflicted by an unflinchingly fallen world and in a very realistic way. God uses a priest to intersect their lives and to begin to heal them, in essence, by taking the "broken shards" of one life to fill the bleeding holes in the other's. Martin uses this "broken shard" imagery several times and in more than just the 2 protagonists' lives. For particulars, other reviewers could elaborate better. I thought Katie' s and Steady' s characters, especially, were multifaceted and deep. It's not that "Sunday" (male protagonist), wasn't excellent, it's just that the backstories of each were so well done. Also, I've recently read many Christian "romances" in which the pain depicted seems a little overdramatized, where the characters are, in essence, just feeling sorry for themselves. While some of this is true in THIS story, it is dealt with realistically, not justified. The scene near the end, where the priest confronts Peter, is so realistic it was great, no spoiler, but it was unexpected, not cliche. Martin handled the "unveiling" of the 2 primary characters especially well, like layers of an onion pealed back slowly, just like you get to know a real person.

I highly recommend. The only reason I didn't give it a 5 star is, simply, I am conservative with my stars. I may come back and elevate my rating later. It probably deserves it.

    Not light reading.
  • This is only my second read with Mr Martin and I am just as wonderfully surprised with this story as I was in the first one. In my wondering about why I am enjoying this author so much I realized that although I find the storylines original and unpredictable and the characters entertaining and easy to feel connection with, there is something intangible about the entirety of both of the books. As I read the authors notes at the end of this eread the answer became clear. Charles Martin was taught a very special gift. One that all true writers search for and thankfully for all of us readers many, and few, have found. It is that unexplainable "something" that pulls a readers in grips them and leaves them in love with all of it, the highs, the lows, the everyday bits and pieces. It leaves us smiling and saddened to see the end of the story. It's what compels us to rush to search for the next story, the next set of characters, to do it all over again and to love it even if we don't understand the why of it. This "something" was obviously gifted to you Mr Martin, passed on in a way. And while it is apparent that you recognize this for yourself based on you Afterword Doc Snakeoil tribute I also want to say Thank You to Mr Dyson. I for one am grateful and very much enjoying the gift you imparted to Mr Martin. Fellow Readers...This is a clean read with just enough angst to stir the butterflies, just enough sadness to make you value the laughs and enough of the ugliness we recognize from this world we share to help you see God's good hands in the lessons. And I am on to download my next journey! Happy Reading!
  • Incredible story -- so difficult to articulate how this book touched me, and feel completely inadequate, but will try. The characters pain is revealed to us in layer by, agonizing, layer. Just when you think you understand their actions, the author reveals another facet to this shining tale of loss and redemption. It reads like a contemporary reality show, in some ways, but with believable characters, and you want to root for a happy ending for them, but just aren't sure it's possible. The writing is beyond stellar, touching the reader to the depths of our own carefully concealed pain. You'll be completely invested in the reclusive fishing guide, the steady spiritual mentor, and the lovely, terribly broken actress. So far from the cliche sounding elements listed, and exactly what you expect from Mr. Martin. Excellently crafted story!
  • I can enjoy a book or hate a book without feeling the need to review it; but this book, for me, was an experience that was amazing. Not only is Mr. Martin a "writer" he has an amazing grasp of the human heart and soul. I was very sad to finish Unwritten but at least I can read it again, and I will. Unwritten is a novel unburdened with too many characters or "plot twists" taking energy to keep track of. Instead, it was an intimate journey that pervaded my thoughts even when I wasn't reading. Tough to put down, and yes...keep the tissues nearby. I cannot remember the last time I was so engrossed by a novel, or compelled to tell others Read it!
  • First, let me say, I’m hooked. Loved it. I started reading and by page 13 I was ready to bail. Lost it descriptions of video games and nothing I was interested in. Rather than bail, I started over again. Because somehow I came off the rails by page 13 and didn’t have a clue what the story was about. The second time I passed page 13, and suddenly felt like a rocket ship. Traveling at such speed I couldn’t set the book down. Finished it in less than a day.

Oh yea, and men don’t cry. There were so many flippin’ times I couldn’t keep my eyes dry, I just left my hanky out on my lap. Thank you Charles, for sharing your gift.
